Brass Miners Lamp

The lamp is made of two sections (top copper, lower half brass) with the glass window in the middle. An S shaped suspension hook is attached to the top, allowing for easy hanging. A plate is attached to the front of the lamp. It reads “British Coal Mining Company Wales UK, Type Vale, Colliery Name & No, Aberaman Colliery, Serial No.10446. The base is stamped “Made in Wales,Vale Metal Spinners Hirwaun”.
Aberaman Colliery opened in 1845. This passed for the Powell Duffryn Company in 1866 after their purchase of the Aberaman Estate. In 1909 the first Mines Rescue Station in South Wales was opened at the Aberaman Colliery and at this timeover a thousand men were employed there. The manager of the colliery at this time was E.M. Hann who was a powerful figure in the South Wales coal trade for many years. Powell Duffryn continued to own the colliery until nationalisation in 1947 when it was taken over by the National Coal Board. Aberaman Colliery closed in 1965.
